What are the negatives in having a suprapubic catheter?

any catheter can introduce infection
the suprapubic catheter goes in through a small incision in the tummy and into the bladder.

and it is generally, held in with sutures;

the stoma — the hole where the catheter goes, must be very carefully looked after, to prevent sore-ness and infection

A blockage of the tube, must be quickly attended to.
as retention of the fluid, can be very uncomfortable,& also lead to kidney problems .
care should be taken to ensure the tube is not kinked and is draining freely.

The other method, is to have an in-dwelling catheter, through the urethra into the bladder .
this is usualy used in the short term
is often pulled out accidentaly , can cause infection , is most uncomfortable, gets kinked and often leaks , and can lead to incontinence of urine .

All this should be explained to the patient directly from the medical team involved.
